No.08.

gir,

Tamar" at Hongkong,

18th June, 1914.

With reference to Your Excellency's letter No.3061/1914 dated 16th June, 1914, relative to outrages

by pirates gangs on junks in the Shun Tak district, I have

the honour to inform Your Excellency that the locality in

question is frequently visited by His Majesty's Gunboatar

and perhaps the junk-masters could be directed to appeal

to their Commanding Officers if possible in future

occasions so that immediate action might be taken. A

similar case occured recently in regard to junke conveying

bricks for building a mission at Fatshan and prompt action

by H.M.S."Sandpiper" had a beneficial effect.

2.

I have ordered H.M.S. "Moorhen" to Canton

to consult with His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General and

embark Mr. Tratman before proceeding to the spot to

remonstrate and take such further action as may be neces-

sary. I request that Mr. Tratman may therefore join

"Moorhen" at Canton on the morning of the 20th June accom-

panied by the junkmaster.
